This Asian Youtuber
White feminism sucks. I'm White. I'm a feminist. I have to be careful about recognizing my privilege and taking the time to understand cultures other than my own. That means owning up to what I don't understand but also seeking out women from other cultures to admire. I happened to find a random tweet linking to a video of this Asian YouTuber whose feed is in characters I don't understand, so I can't even name her here. However, her beautiful videos are this week's beguilement.
The subject matter is fairly simple. This woman makes things. Food, swings, paper, make-up, shoes - all from absolute scratch. It's amazing.
But what's truly captivating about these videos is the way they are put together. Everything is shot so beautifully. The scenery is amazing. There is no talking, only tranquil music. I think I like them even more because I can't even understand when words flash on the screen. There isn't even a hope of me recreating these things she makes. It's all about the process. In fact, unlike a lot of American cooking or DIY shows that end in either a competition or a woman cooking all day to feed all her beautiful friends who are coming over, this truly is all about the process because, at the end of the video, often she just sits and enjoys her food by herself.
The videos are like meditation. Attention is paid to each step and sense. You may hear sounds of nature in the distance, the scraping of a spoon, the sizzle of frying oil.
But there's humor sometimes too. *spoiler alert* In this one she goes through an incredible process of making paper from scratch. She spends days going through so many intricate processes. Finally, the paper is done and she's cutting it into slices when it suddenly rips. She freezes then crumples the paper she's spent hours working on and throws it into the fire.

Watch them. I know you'll love them.
Excessively diverted,
